As one of the most prized and well-trodden areas of your home, it's important to treat your lawn with the care and respect it deserves.

Maintaining your Penrith lawn does take a fair bit of work—but by being consistent and doing the right things, your efforts will be more than worth it.

If you live in or around the Penrith area and you’re looking to keep your lawn looking fresh throughout the year, there are four things you should do regularly and we’re going to tell you what they are...

Read on to discover our four tip-top ways to maintain your Penrith lawn.

1) Watering

Okay, you probably know that watering your lawn is essential to keeping it healthy. The question is, do you know how often to do so?

As a general rule of thumb, during the cooler months, watering your lawn once or twice a week for 30 minutes will do the trick. But, when it's hot, you should aim to water your lawn three to four times a week for around an hour at a time.

For the best results, you should use sprinklers for an even spread and water your lawn earlier in the day.

Bonus tip: Different turf varieties require slightly different levels of watering, so it’s always worth doing a little research.

2) Dethatching

Almost every Penrith lawn experiences a build-up of thatch from time to time. Thatch refers to the layer of dead grass, leaves, and mulch that builds up between your grass and soil. Too much thatch can prevent essential moisture and nutrients from reaching the roots—and kill it.

To keep your lawn healthy, you should aim to dethatch it on a regular basis; at least twice a month, if required. For the best results, carefully rake your grass with a lawn rake, working thoroughly on one section at a time.

Once you’ve raked up the thatch, you should dispose of it sensibly and cast your eye over the lawn to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

3) Aeration

Another simple yet effective way of maintaining your Penrith lawn is by aerating it.

Aeration is the process of creating small holes in your lawn at specific depths (usually one to six inches deep and two to six inches apart) to help nutrients reach the grassroots while managing flooding or water-logging issues.

By aerating your Penrith lawn once or twice a year, you will help maintain its colour, shine, and resilience. You can carry out aeration with a simple garden fork or you can even invest in some special spiked shoes to get the job done!

4) Fertilising

Another effective way to keep your lawn healthy is fertilising it around every eight weeks during the growing season.

For the best results, you should check which fertilisers are best suited to your grass type and once you’ve chosen your ideal product, follow the instructions on the pack or bottle down to the last detail.

Frequent fertilisation will help your lawn remain green and luscious—so it’s certainly worth doing.
